Spiti Valley, 2004 / 2005.
Kyi Monastery is situated at an altitude of 3,800 m (12,467 ft) in Spiti Valley, in the north-eastern province Himachal Pradesh / India, close to the Tibetan border. Surrounded by mountain ranges of almost 5,000 m (16,500 ft), the remote valley is home to ethnic Tibetan settlements and less frequented by tourists than the neighbouring province of Ladakh.
Located close to the main road alongside the Spiti River and dating back to the 17th century, the active monastery hosts numerous religious artefacts of varying quality.
The Kyi Monastery project aims to create a prominent spot for information about the art and history of Spiti Valley, which lies at the entrance to the region. Visitor awareness is crucial in order to preserve the local culture and prevent perpetual art theft.
